How to fight cravings – Eating foods that does not Noursh your body and the effects it has.
The dreaded food craving…
In order to defeat your enemy, you must know your enemy and nothing can be closer to the truth for this topic. Millions across the country are dependent on foods that are pretty harmful to their body. We call this dependency “Cravings”. Now, why are we so dependent on these foods? Mainly because the ingredients are habit forming. The most addictive one of them all is High Fructose Corn Syrup that mimics table sugar, but beaks down in your body like Alcohol. Ever give your children a bowl of beer with milk? I can bet you have and probably every morning. If you don’t believe this is habit forming, try eating just one chip for 24 hours. So, let me try to explain why you crave the wrong foods.
Hunger in of itself are not bad. It is natures way of telling you that you have to eat. When you are functioning regularly, your body release food in the form of fat for your cell to eat. When there are not enough in the reserve tanks or fat cells, your body sends a signal to your brain that it is time to eat. When you ingest foods your body goes to work; breaking down that food and turning it into fat so your cell can eat or be nourished. Whatever is left over is either stored away in your fat cells or are disposed of. This cycle is repeated for the rest of your life. So, the problem is NOT Hunger, but the type of foods you are craving. You see, your body can only send a signal to eat, but your dependency on certain foods is what determines what you want to eat.
Sweets are addictive. The more you have the more you want, but sweet tasting foods like cakes and pies does not help nourish your cells. Ever wonder why you are STILL hungry after eating a box of donuts? Well, your body needs nutrition and when it doesn’t get that nutrition its screams for it; EAT SOMETHING! When you decide to eat donuts or other empty calories, it spikes your blood sugar level which releases Insulin. Insulin then goes to do its job to bring your blood sugar down. Your body can only burn off a certain amount of sugar at a time; about the size of a tablespoon. After that, the rest is stored into your fat cells. This is not to punish as you may think, but to save your life. Sugar is EXTREMELY toxic to your body. If you have the same amount of sugar in your bloodstream that is in a glass of soda, it CAN kill you.
Now, the cycle of eating and nourishing your cells has been broken. The sweets that you ate did not go to your cells, because its very harmful to your body, but instead went to your fat cells which is making you fat. Your body is still hungry, so naturally it tells you to eat. But, your craving or new dependency for sweets and junk foods are telling you that you need more junkie sweet tasting foods. So, you eat more bad foods and rinse and repeat.
How to break this cycle. Well, my friend this is easier said then done, but I will try my best to help you.
First, you are going to have to stop eating the foods that you are craving like pizza, bagels, cakes, soda, and juices. The longer you are away from these foods the better.
Next, you have to reset your bodies cycle. If you are overweight, its not because you eat too much. Its because you are starving your body on a cellular level. You have to start eating properly so your body can rebound. Protein, Veggies, and fruits… (The whole fruit, not just the juice). Over time your body will begin to repair the damages you inflicted on it by boosting your metabolism.
Third, exercise. Now, how is exercising going to stop my cravings. Well, directly it doesn’t. What exercising does is forces your body to increase your metabolism. (More on that in another post.) Your body is a survival machine. It does what it has to to preserve itself. When its not getting the nutrition it needs it will slow down to be able to function on what it does have. The most efficient way your body know to do this is to decrease your metabolism. Exercising doesn’t allow your body to do this effectively. So, your body will tell you to eat something and since you’re now eating right you can show your body that there is nothing to worry about and when you do eat your body on a cellular level is being fed which in turns turn off the hunger button.
This process can take a while depending on how much damage has been done. It took me almost 2 years before I was able to kick my dependency on sweets.
